Every storyboard begins with an idea or concept. For this post, let’s use my Human Centered Design assignment, Mobile WorkSpace, which centers on transportation. This storyboard is about a group of students attempting to locate a convenient place to study outside of school hours.

Storyboard Design Tools

With just pencils, markers and 8.5 x 11 paper, you can create five panels that tell stakeholders a story about your idea. By designing with the less fancy star people  I was able to quickly and cheaply flesh out my design idea without the added expense of sketching software.

  • Ex. 1 Paper Storyboard
  • Ex. 2 Paper Storyboard

My paper storyboard isn’t going to win any artistic design award. However, it does tell a quick story from start to ending with just pens and papers.

Give Your Storyboard a Concept

Every story needs a hero. Your idea should be it. Whether you’re using paper tools or digital ones, make sure each storyboard identifies the problem your idea is solving. Again your panels don’t have to go into the granular details.

  • Panel 1
  • Panel 2
  • Panel 3

Now let’s use the storyboard above to answer the following questions:

  • What problem will this product, idea, or creation solve?
  • Who are the target user(s) this product, idea, or creation will benefit?
  • How will the user interact with the idea, product, or creation?

In conclusion

As you can see don’t have to get fancy to storyboard your design ideas. The main goal is telling a story. If you want to create your own storyboard visit Storyboard That.
